6.15.10 (22nd Telus International Dragon Boat Festival)

On June 15-16, 2010, the Toronto International Dragon Boat Festival occurred on Centre Island in Canada.  Our Red Dragon teammates (Jaclyn and Clem) competed  with The New York Wall Street Dragons and SRP, respectively.  The days started out taking a ferry to Centre Island, the only means of transportation to the Island, except by small plane.  The weather was beautiful and the competition intense.  The were many sponsored teams, community teams, educational teams, hospital teams, industrial/business corporate teams, 30 junior teams, women/men teams, non-profit teams, and mixed teams.  There were approximately 120 mixed teams ranging in the finals from Division A through S; racing six across.  The races were 500 meters with the fastest times of the days being 2:00.17 and 2:00.63 for both the Mayfair Warriors and the Canadian Senior Team.  The Canadian Senior Team won the Premier Championship Final, beating all the younger paddling and premier teams.  The New York Wall Street Dragons placed Silver in the International Division to Manayunk.  We beat the Trinidad and Tobago Team and Ukraine Team, who were stacked with muscularly, fit racers.  The New York Wall Street Dragons also won Silver in the Premier Mixed Division D Final , finishing second by only 0.01 seconds with a 500 meter time of 2:09.34;  placing 20 out of approximately 120 teams. Clem's team, SRP, finishing third in the Premier Mixed Division B Final, with a time of 2:01.75 and first in the Community Toronto Sun Final.  Thank you,  New York Wall Street Dragons and friends, for your hospitality, great food, friendship, and competition!!  See you in Montreal and Atlanta!!

6.11.10 (Never Judge a Dragon Boat Team by its Name)

Truth be told, when your dear and beloved sister team, the New York Wall Street Dragons, drove down to Philadelphia early morning on June 4th 2010, we figured we should come home with the gold. We looked at the list of teams participating in the Independence Dragon Boat Regatta, and we saw that the Philadelphia Dragon Boat Association teams were officiating, not racing, and our usual competitors from New York weren’t coming out. We pumped ourselves up by saying that it’d be really disappointing if we don’t win gold. So you can imagine how irked we were when we got beaten by the Wyverns by more than 2 seconds on the time trial. Now, WSD isn’t known for a superb performance on the first race of the day, but still, Wyverns don’t usually compete in the same division as us. Then we carefully looked at who’s actually sitting on that boat and realized that a good number of them are from the US National Team. Let that be a lesson to you guys! Never judge a dragon boat team by its name. And yet at the same time, never give up no matter who’s paddling on the other boats!! So the day went on, and as expected, WSD and Wyverns were side by side in the A division grand final. Billy Wong, our steerer, gave us a pep talk before the race. Get the starts right; jump out into the course. If we can keep up with them within 2 seats, then we can take them on the finish! And when Billy asks for something, the team gives it to him! Our start was the best we had that day; through the transition we kept the boat speed up. We were at most 3 seats behind the Wyverns down the lane. And when Billy asked for a finish at around 300m line, we immediately shortened that difference. As Billy told it later, the steersman for the Wyverns had shock and surprise written all over his face as he saw our boat jump. They hurriedly started their finish and we fought for that gold. It was a good fight, but unfortunately we crossed the finish line 0.6 seconds after the Wyverns. We wanted it, guys; we wanted that gold real bad. And we worked for it with everything we got, and we worked for it together. And even though the color of our medal was silver, we were happy and we were satisfied. We gave those National Team paddlers a run for their money. The average age of WSD paddlers may be higher than some, and we may not have the guns like some of you iron-pumpers, but never ever underestimate us!! We may not win at the end of the race, but we’ll make sure you mean it when you say “Great race!!” Philly race was, in a nutshell, what dragon boating is all about. Competition, sweat, teamwork. Shaky arms, sore legs and numb ass. 20 paddlers moving as one towards a common goal. Win or lose, it’s an exhilarating experience. This is why we dragon boat. And of course, don’t forget the beer at the end!!

6.7.10 (Philly race venue - Mary Helen/Tampa)

Philly is a fabulous city! Great food. Regatta was well run. Very windy, strong currents. Almost lost a tent. Both Mainline & Wyvern had a lot od PDBC paddlers, so they were strong. Wall St. Dragons were very strong all day and came in 2nd to Wyverns. Both teams were 11 secs ahead of Booze Allen and the Philly Police Dept.

5.15.10 (Washington D.C. Dragon Boat Festival)

A few of our Red Dragon Teammates (Bob and Jaclyn, with Yas being our biggest fan) raced with our northern sister team , The New York Wall Street Dragons in Washington DC on May 15-16,2010.
The race site was spectacular on the Potomac River by the Water Gate Building with beautiful spring weather.  The races were two days consisting of 250 meters and 500 meter races, respectively.  There was a blind team that raced and was remarkable with their efforts!
The New York Wall Street Dragons won Gold in the  Minor A Division for both the 250 and 500 meter races; ranking fourth throughout the races out of approximately 70 teams.  Thank you NYWSD for letting us paddle with you.  We had a great time with the competition and your friendship.

5.10.10 (Marathon race)

Thank you Clay and Jaime for the below comments!! Stated perfectly!! This is who the Red Dragons are: classy competitors!! Thank you Dennis and each and everyone of our teammates for building such a great foundation to lean and build on!

Jaclyn
Thanks Clay for such a beautiful message and putting together a team to keep showing the RDs power. As we say in my country (i.e. obviously Mexico for most of you even if you know that I am from Spain...) "por la boca muere el pez " which means "by the mouth is how the fish dies".  We the RDs are modest and simple people who do not need to open the big mouth or show trophies off to let everyone know what we are worth. We are an awesome family called RDs that I am proud to be part of! Let's just keep doing what we do best and let the others talk...let's keep practicing and enjoy paddling together to be on top for the next competition.

JR
5.9.10 (Marathon race)

This is a shorter version of Clay's message =)

So I am writing this to thank each and every member who participated and went the extra mile to be a part of the team. ANY WAY YOU LOOK AT IT, WE WERE SUCCESSFUL. Special Thanks: Sho, Noel and Clem for traveling all that way to be a part of the Red Dragons Family. Pregnant Leti, and an injured Theresa for the ultimate support. Jaclyn's parents and Lea's mom for amazing support. Theresa and Marioly for hydration. Alexis for attending her last race as a residential Red Dragon.
For those unaware, Alexis is relocating to California. We'll miss her dearly. Chen for his first race and getting a silver doing it! Harmony for doing what she does best! And EVERY one else for a great show of sportsmanship and cooperation! Together Everyone Achieves More.
We are more than team, we are Family!

Thanks

Clay

4.20.10 (New Orleans)

Thanks for a great weekend! It was definitely a first time for a lot of things for me, first flight, first time racing with another team in a totally different venue, and first time for new eats! No matter what anyone says, Red Dragons swept the festival! FACT. I hope we get to see each other soon, and I'm sure we will! Thanks again to the wonderful sponsor and RD! See you guys soon!

Tim

4.19.10 (New Orleans)

9.20.09 (Joyce and Gordon)

The Red Dragons would like to acknowledge Gordon and Joyce for their 'goodbye gift" to the team. Ever since these 'Scots' joined the Red Dragons via Singapore, the Red Dragon's have never been the same. We have won more, smiled more, laughed more, ate more, paddled more; all while translating and developing British Accents. We cannot possibly thank you enough for coming into all of our lives and giving us great memories. We are supposed to give you a 'goodbye gift", but you gave us the best and need 'gift' - Eliane's Dragon Boat. Thank you, Eliane, for making your preciously detailed dragon boat available to our team. Thank you, Gordon and Joyce, for making this surprise purchase of Eliane's dragon boat for the Red Dragon's Dragon Boat Racing Team. We will never forget you, Gordon and Joyce!! We expect and anticipated that
you will come back to the USA to paddle with us!! How about Tampa in 2010?! The best to you both, we love and miss you!! =)

5.28.09 (Tampa and Marathon race)

The Red Dragons successfully raced in Tampa and Marathon in May 2009.  The competition was intense in Tampa.  We meet our goals, with 110% determination, to maximize our power, synchronization, and training to compete equally on the next level of competition.  We have raced in enough races now as a team to experience unforeseen obstacles, therefore building on them to make us stronger 'together'.  The comradeship between the members and beauty of Marathon was amazing under a full moon.  This Red Dragon team inaugurated new members and leaders, who were able to apply the Red Dragon's philosophy of 'power finishing' a race while always focusing and building on the fundamental techniques of paddling and friendship. We
continue to enjoy each other and develop positively 'together' until the next race
.

4.2.09 (Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run Fort Lauderdale)

Let's congratulate: Jason, John H, Paul, Gordon, and Joyce for their successful participation in the Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run!!!  Way to go!!

3.21.09 (Red Dragons Youth Team)

Congratulations to the newest and youngest members of the Red Dragons!

The Red Dragons Youth Team took life as 22 kids from the ages of 9 to 18 had their first practice of the season. It was a great practice as we split the youth team into two boats. Each boat had several veterans that took part in assisting the kids with form, timing and making sure they were having a great time. Practice ended with a short  1:15 min race. We were all very proud on how they remained calm, in synch and as Dennis yelled "FINISH IT", both boats kicked it up a notch and really FINISHED IT!!!! Thank you to Clay, Marioly, Theresa, Tom T., Bill, Paul, and Dennis for assisting on the boats. The kids had a great time and are looking forward to their next practice and their first race.

12.19.08 (Red Dragons end of year Dinner and awards)

What a great dinner party at the Big Tomato Market Grill, it was a great showing (more than 50 of us) Now, only if I can get all of you to come out to practice once a week we will be in better shape, I guess that's why we are still a recreational team.Frown

7.30.08 (Our Friend Antonio Figueira)

As happy as I am to come back from Long Beach race, this is a sad week for many of us. I am going to take this time to provide a moment of silence for our friend Antonio, who tragically lost his life a few days ago to a extremely fast current while fishing over at Coles Point Resort near Healey Falls, Canada. He was/and is an amazing human being, with a heart larger than life. He will be missed dearly. My thoughts go out to his family, friends, and his girlfriend Bronwyn. I am still speechless at the moment, and will write more thoughts, once I can fully get a grasp of them. My friend Antonio, it was great paddling with you by my side and I am going to miss you very much.

Dennis

3.20.08 (Synergy Dragon Boat Racing Series)

The Synergy Dragon Boat Racing Series kicks off on April 19th at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach. Teams of 11 will paddle colorful boats that resemble stylized Chinese dragons and are more than 30 feet long. Paddlers are led by a drummer who helps them stay on the beat and remain motivated as arms burn and the water flies. Dragon boating is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. The last full regatta in Broward County was three years ago. Will Murphy, president of Synergy Outdoor Adventure Resources (SOAR), and an avid dragon boat paddler himself, decided that was too long, and SOAR is directing a series of four regattas. The other events in the series are scheduled for June 28-29, September 6-7 and November 22-23. read more.... at  http://www.mercedesbenzcorporaterun.com
