This year’s Haulover event gave many new Red Dragon members their first taste of racing. Of course, race day was not without its traditional assortment of quirks, from 45-minute start delays to a full-scale fire ant invasion that caused pandemic levels of foot swelling and bilingual cursing. But the team stuck it out to come only inches away from gold in the mixed final, while the women medaled despite pulling double duty all day.
Steersman Simon Shum was easily the MVP of the event, ably handling heavy conditions throughout the day and weathering an epic collision from local rival Puff in the thrilling final. Captain Dennis Yu awarded Simon the team trophy for his efforts, following a medal ceremony marked by multiple lightning strikes, an egg-roll eating contest, and food skirmishes involving the exotic and surprisingly aerodynamic dragon fruit.
